A Tale Of Two Races
For nearly two hours on Sunday morning, the distance running world was in absolute shock as Kenyan marathoner Ruth Chepngetich blasted through the first half of 2022 Chicago Marathon. Never before have we seen a female athlete average under 4:50 per mile for the first ten miles of a marathon. Eventually, Chepngetich paid for her early race heroics & missed the women's world record by only 10 seconds as she ran 2:14:14.
Finishing in second a full four minutes back, Emily Sisson broke the American record for the marathon by over half a minute being the first American female under 2:19. She executed the race with a perfect negative split, never referencing her pace on her watch.
In this episode of Fanboys!, Tomek & Steve discuss the differences between these two styles of race execution & then go on to talk about the current sate of women's marathoning which is seeing an unbelievable string of inspiring & mind-boggling performances both at the world & American levels. Join us as we break it all down.
